Stephen Barnes runs Birchden Farm which grows about 25 acres of asparagus in Groombridge. A high proportion of the crop is sold through the farm shop, open daily in season, with the remainder being sold at local farmers markets and to the hotel, pub and restaurant trade. The shop also sells new season fruit and veg as it becomes available, and a selection of sauces and jams to compliment any meal.
Asparagus is a very fast growing vegetable which needs to be cut daily to be at its best, which means fresh cut crop is available seven days a week. The season runs from about the third week of April until the 21st June. Harvest stops on this date to allow the crop to go to fern and regenerate for next year.
Pot grown Christmas trees are a new venture for the farm, available in the run-up to Christmas along with cut Nordmann firs.
Opening times for asparagus:
Mon – Sat 9am to 6pm Sun 9am – 4pm
